Introduction

The project involves the creation and management of a model productive agroecosystem of perennial crops (vineyard, fig orchard, aromatic plants), resilient to the environmental impacts of climate change, implementing principles of the circular economy.

Starting with the experimental organic vineyard for the rescue of indigenous varieties by the Co-op ‘Hephaistio Anemotia’ and the new crops that will be established within the framework of Participatory Earth Stewardship, innovative practices will be implemented for the utilization of agro-livestock by-products, rainwater saving, carbon sequestration, etc., aiming to improve the soil characteristics for the benefit of the sustainability of the agroecosystem and ultimately the local communities.

At the same time, the farm will be designed to host activities for the promotion of research, education, information/awareness, and citizen participation.

The ultimate goal is the formation and free distribution to the public and to the Directorate of Rural Economy of Lesvos of a new ‘road map’, rules for the integrated and sustainable management of agricultural land and by-products of the main productive sectors of Lesvos (winemaking, livestock, and olive oil production).

Objectives

Addressing the impacts of climate change on primary production (water saving, improving the capacity to retain moisture and nutrients in soils).

Application of the principles of the circular economy in primary production, winemaking, livestock farming, and olive oil production

Minimization of the ecological footprint of crops, winemaking, livestock farming, and olive oil production

Carbon sequestration and storage in systems of perennial crops (Carbon Farming).

Dissemination of the above practices and the principles of sustainable development

Regenerative Agriculture through the restoration of desertified soil, erosion control, improvement of soil quality and productivity.

Conservation of biodiversity through the planting of indigenous varieties (fig trees, aromatic plants).

Preservation of the landscape and the historical-cultural values of the area (dry stone structures).

Creation of stable and decent job positions

Education and upgrading of the local human resources.

Enhancement of the participation of people, cultivators, landowners, and the local community at large

Modernization of local entrepreneurship.

Exchange and promotion of expertise on Participatory Land Stewardship.

Initially, a system of perennial crops (existing experimental vineyard, new fig orchard, and aromatic plants) will be designed and installed in the field, and pilot cultivation methods based on the principles and practices of regenerative agriculture and circular economy will be developed, emphasizing:

a. Rational management of water resources within the field
By shaping the natural relief with dry stone terracing and creating the necessary infrastructure for collecting rainwater (from the roof of the existing storage) in tanks, we aim to address the intense seasonal fluctuations in water availability and demand.

b. Reuse of by-products from the cultivation process and local production units
Applying the principles of the circular economy, we experiment with a holistic management of cultivation residues (prunings) from the vineyard and the fig orchard as well as by-products from winemaking (grape marc, wine lees), livestock (manure, sheep wool), and olive oil production (olive leaves), to produce biochar, soil conditioners, and mulching.

c. Protection and rejuvenation of the soils in the field
By applying mixtures of soil conditioners, increasing organic matter, enhancing microbial diversity, improving soil structure and its capacity to retain water and nutrients, and using mulching for protection against overheating and evaporation, etc.

d. Selection of suitable crops
The cultivated biodiversity of the existing experimental vineyard is enhanced by adding a fig orchard of indigenous varieties, given that the fig adapts well to various types of soil, has minimal requirements, and is adapted to climate change due to its rich and strong root system. Simultaneously, its fruits can be processed at the facilities of the Co-op for the production of traditional products such as dried figs, grape syrup, and distillates.

It should be noted that the cultivation of local fig varieties in western Lesvos flourished until the 1970s, with active processing and sales cooperatives for figs. However, in recent decades, this activity has been abandoned, and indigenous fig varieties are also tending to disappear.

Additionally, the creation of corridors and clusters with indigenous aromatic plants is planned, which have low moisture requirements and protect the soil from erosion, while simultaneously acting as pockets of biodiversity and hosting beneficial organisms and deterring harmful insects.

Secondly, the proposed farm will be shaped to be visitable and to host educational activities related to the above and others, always with a common denominator of the environment, regenerative agriculture, circular economy, and sustainable development.

As the original and innovative practices and technologies will be applied on a pilot and small scale on the farm, they will be simultaneously presented to the public (visitors, farmers, students, etc.) and utilized in organizing experiential workshops.

Actions

The implementation of the above will follow a methodology, which consists of carrying out the following actions (D), which are interconnected with a chronological and logical sequence:

  1. Spatial mapping, collection, and assessment of edaphoclimatic data.
    Design and spatial planning of land uses: Design of new plantings, placement of compost piles, areas for biochar production, rainwater tanks, design of an irrigation system, design of educational spaces, demonstration, wildlife observation areas, and trails.
    Design of a soil enrichment experiment/enhancement and protection of the soil ecosystem with soil conditioners and mulching materials such as mixtures of biochar, grape marc, wine lees, manure, olive leaves, and sheep wool.
    Planning of cultivation activities for the duration of the project.

The installation of the new fig orchard and other plantings are necessary to make the site visitable and to facilitate educational activities. The new vineyard already exists (about 850 vines). Additionally, the following are proposed:

Earthmoving works for the formation of terraces and natural relief for surface runoff of water—construction/repair of dry stone walls (estimated 160m length) and stone-paved paths (estimated 30m length)—purchase and transport of soil/stones (estimated 10 cubic meters of stones)—fencing—construction and installation of a metal gate—purchase of wire mesh/metal posts, metal gate.

It is emphasized that up to about 60 years ago, dry stone terraces were the main infrastructure supporting the primary production model of the islands (agriculture, livestock, beekeeping), simultaneously providing opportunities for the development of significant socio-cultural characteristics, both tangible (carved and structured landscape, cultivated biodiversity) and intangible (traditional know-how, customs, and traditions). At the same time, the terraces supported the diachronic functionality of the island environment, reducing soil erosion, contributing to water conservation, and favoring natural biodiversity (indigenous flora, wild fauna).

To highlight and promote the value of dry stone walls, the project will network with the “Laboratory of Cultural Heritage Management” (LCHM) of the University of the Aegean. Since 2002, LCHM has been involved in researching, documenting, highlighting, and promoting the dry stone constructions of Greece, especially those of Lesvos. A representative of this entity is part of the Project Team.

Development of an outdoor area for gatherings/education and wildlife observation in the caldera of the Anemotia volcano—installation of an outdoor pergola (up to 50 sq.m.), to shelter educational activities—purchase/construction of pergola and other accessories—purchase of wildlife observation equipment (binoculars and peripherals).

Regarding the observation of wildlife in the caldera of the Anemotia volcano, the project will network with the “Kalloni Environmental Information Center” (KEIC), which is operated by the “Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos.” KEIC Kalloni organizes and implements a series of activities each year aimed at informing, entertaining, and raising awareness about environmental and natural issues. A representative of this entity is part of the Project Team.

Collection and transport of volcanic rocks from the caldera of the Anemotia volcano and the development of an outdoor exhibition area for the collection—purchase of materials for placement and marking of rocks. For the creation of the collection of volcanic rocks, the “Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos,” due to its expertise, will play a special role as a partner in the project. Development of pathways with signage to connect the various activities of the farm (cultivations, composting/biochar production areas, storage, educational spaces)—purchase of signage materials.

The maximum roof area that can be utilized has an area of 200 sq.m. With an average annual rainfall of 730 mm, approximately 150 cubic meters of rainwater can potentially be collected. From these, it is economically feasible, based on the resources of the proposed project, to store about 20 cubic meters in above-ground tanks for the immediate needs of the farm:

Design and installation of a rainwater collection system from the roof of the existing storage and storage in above-ground tanks: Procurement of gutters, tanks, and other hydraulic equipment

Initial tillage (deep plowing) and soil enrichment – procurement of specialized cultivation equipment and enrichment materials (lawnmower, shredder, shovels, picks, wheelbarrows, saws, scissors, hoses, connectors, sprinklers, supports, etc.) – selection and ordering of plants and cultivation materials – employment of farm workers – layout of planting areas – installation of automatic irrigation. Planting of fig trees (estimated 200 plants) and aromatic plants (estimated 600 plants). Soil mulching with natural materials (e.g., sheep wool).

Infrastructure is being created for the utilization of by-products from perennial crops (prunings from vineyards and fig trees), winemaking/distillation (wine lees, grape marc), olive oil production (olive leaves), and livestock (manure, sheep wool):

Layout of storage spaces for raw materials (prunings, wine lees, grape marc, manure, olive leaves, sheep wool) from which soil conditioner mixtures and mulching materials will be produced. Purchase of open plastic containers for collecting grape marc/wine lees and other materials for the construction and layout of the composting areas. Production of biochar. Construction/supply of a special experimental kiln (800 liters) and accessories for pyrolytic combustion. Mixing biochar with other raw materials to produce soil conditioners.

Sampling and laboratory analyses of raw materials and soil amendment mixtures to assess their nutritional value for plants. Based on the analysis results, determination of application doses. Pilot application of soil amendment materials and soil covering on the farm crops, according to the experimental design. Sampling and laboratory soil analyses, evaluation of the pilot application of soil amendments and soil covering, taking into account parameters such as soil organic matter, soil fertility, and soil moisture.

Regarding the importance of soil management and biodiversity conservation in the context of climate change mitigation, the project will be connected with the “Soil Laboratory” of the Ionian University, which has accumulated experience in implementing related actions. A representative of the institution will lead the Project Team.

Through awareness-raising/education actions, the aim is to inform the public about the project, raise awareness, and educate them to understand and adopt the necessity of an environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable approach to the upgrading of degraded ecosystems.

Design and implementation of experiential educational/informative workshops:
The experience of the Community Cooperative from the experiential workshops organized within the framework of the project “Restoration of degraded soil through its transformation into an organic vineyard for the preservation of indigenous varieties” taught us a lot about the communication process and the effective dissemination of information and knowledge transfer. It showed us that there is a critical mass of people in Lesbos who constantly seek opportunities to meet, share experiences, and collectively produce, acting as knowledge multipliers and shapers of public opinion.
In the stage of farm formation, addressing the climate crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean, tackling challenges, and adaptation, the need for the rejuvenation of soil ecosystems, the value of constructions such as dry stone walls, and earthworks in cultivation with hand tools.

In the stage of planting, focusing on the management of water and soil resources in arid-thermal environments.

In the installation and operation stage of methods for utilizing agricultural by-products: composting, production of biochar, carbon sequestration in soil (carbon farming).

At the Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesbos, by organizing an informative seminar on the climate crisis, which will broaden the understanding of the participants regarding fossil fuels and the environmental impacts of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, through the analysis of the carbon cycle. At the same time, it will highlight the potential of natural ecosystems for carbon sequestration and storage and propose sustainable ecological solutions for mitigating the climate crisis and adapting to it. Due to the long distance, bus rental is proposed for the organized transportation of participants to the Museum headquarters in Sigri.

Finally, there will be a standardization of the workshops to be repeated in the future.

Upon completion of all fieldwork, a final public seminar will be organized in collaboration with the Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesbos, where the project contributors will present the entire project implementation process, the challenges and results, the goals of the Community Cooperative, the need for adaptation to the impacts of the climate crisis, the value of regenerative agriculture, and the circular economy.

Publicity services
Production of digital and other informational materials, design of a central message (web banner/digital posters/videos/texts) for postings/shares on social media, critical websites, and for printing, with the aim of promoting the project.
Periodic distribution of press releases and announcements to media outlets and postings on electronic social networks (e.g., launch, interim results, experiential workshops, etc.).
Formation and management of a dedicated section of the Community Cooperative’s central website for posting and gathering all generated material.

Printing
Printing (flyers, posters, banners, souvenirs with logos of organizations, etc.) for informational/educational purposes.

Photography
All stages of project implementation will be documented through photography (purchase of photographic equipment and peripherals).

Participation/Co-organization, networking at events of other organizations for the dissemination of project results regarding regenerative agriculture, circular economy, primary production, by-product management, etc.

The Community Cooperative seeks networking to create bonds between individuals, groups, organizations, etc., collaboration, joint action, and advocacy, even for creating economies of scale. Only through the promotion of collective actions and interventions is the dynamic coverage of social needs achieved in areas where individual, uncoordinated, and fragmentary actions fail.

In this context, the project will be networked with the “Viticulture Festival” regularly and repeatedly organized by the Association of Winemakers of Anemotia Lesbos “O Kampos”, which takes place in the last ten days of August each year with numerous environmental activities and high visitation from all over Lesbos and beyond, as well as with the ecological actions of the Environmental Association “Lesvos without plastics” and the Cultural-Environmental Association of Skalochori “Oak”. Representatives of the respective organizations will staff the Project Team.

Writing the final report of results constitutes an important step in evaluating the project. This report should include the outcomes of various activities conducted, the procedures followed, as well as the challenges encountered and how they were addressed. It is worth noting that a significant position in the economic activity of Lesvos is held by the primary sector, mainly with the vast expanses of olive groves covering the island, while a large portion of the workforce is engaged in animal husbandry. In this context, the project will be linked with the “Directorate of Agricultural Economy of Lesvos” of the North Aegean Region, and the “Research Laboratory for Labor Geography” of the University of the Aegean for further utilization of the results in the primary sector and employment. Representatives of the respective bodies staff the Project Team.

Maintaining a record of evidence in accordance with the provisions of the Project Implementation Guide (team movements, postal shipments-courier services, contracts with external collaborators/field workers, invoices and payment receipts, responsible declarations, etc.), entering invoices into transparency platform.
